“I have a *insert social media platform here*, do I really need a website?
This is one of the several common questions that people often ask. If the question above describes you, I will advise you read this post to the end. In this present day and computer age, any business that does not have a website is already at a disadvantage! A website is probably the most important marketing tool in your arsenal. Not only because of the impact it can have on your business, but how it affects your marketing methods. Having said that, here are few reasons why you really need to have a website developed, and developed properly.

1.) For the sake of your customers
The continuous increase in e-commerce has forced many of us to change our patterns of buying. Many people now look up a business online before patronizing a product or service. We all want to see the reviews on a product or the business that provides them. A website answers the simple, most common questions a client may have. Therefore, as a business owner, your customers expect you to have a web presence. A mention of your company may be short and sweet, but the information you provide on your website can be much more detailed as you have full creative permission to do and add as you wish. You’re not stuck to only 140 characters or only stuck to posting a simple graphics. You can do what you wish, and share all the information you want.
2.) Social Media is NOT a Website
Many clients say “I have social media, I don’t need a website”, very wrong! Not everyone has social media (scary thought I know), and there are those that use social media to be…well social. People don’t want to be sold to all the time, or advertised about your new product. Social media can be used as a means of advertisement, and lead generation however should not be seen as a businesses website.
With social media, you are stuck within their rules and algorithm (let’s not get into this), and you are at the mercy of that platforms website. Why do you want to have your business that you create and run, be at the mercy of another business? You may not stand out on social media, as perhaps another business in the same niche is showing up more than your business.
Recently Facebook & Instagram went down for roughly 12 to 20 hours (pending on full functionally of members accounts). This we hope would be a huge eyeopener to those who run their business solely off of these platforms. For example, someone who is a boutique owner who is just using the Facebook shop to sell all of their products. That was 12-20 hours potentially of lost revenue! Depending on their traffic that can be a huge loss to that business. That business owner has no way to fix the issue, or control the outage.
With any website, there is always the risk something can go wrong and you have down time. We just went through this personally, after years of trying new elements to offer clients our website got bogged down, and we made the decision to swipe it clean and start over…this was downtime for us, and yes people were trying to look at our site. In that time though, we were able to contact our support resources through our hosting to have them restore it. WE controlled that outage, and we worked to get it back. That’s not something you can do with being on a social media platform.
I describe to most of my clients that a website is like a spiderweb. Your website itself is at the center – this is where everything happens. Each strand outward from the center is the social media platforms. Each of this brings in leads towards your website. With social media, you have to be actively engaging (which you should anyways), but if you are posting constantly about look at this product, and look at this product eventually, you do need to sleep – and depending on your marketing strategy this slows down your presence. With a website, it’s always there….always showing the information you want to present, always answering questions.
Besides the lack of control you have over Facebook, recently more and more business owners are seeing that Facebook & Instagram is business friendly. Posts are getting buried, and the algorith is hiding more businesses.
3.) Being Present All The Time
As we previously mentioned, your website is ALWAYS there to provide information. If you look into the fact of someone working a cash register, or answering emails 2/7 no business would want to hire employees to work 24 hours for something they can achieve through an affordable means. Having a website is similar to having a very good sales representative that will affordably sell your business all round the clock without being tired or asking for a raise.
With a reader-friendly site, you will save yourself from all the FAQs about your services or products. If you are online or not, anyone who desires further details about your business, the product or service you offer can easily access your site to get all the vital information they needed. Recently we’ve added a chat box onto our site, and we can’t tell you how much this has helped us! We have present some of the most common things people look for: pricing, portfolio, booking a consult – people can open our chat box, click an option and be directly exactly where they need to go. This can all be done without someone actively chatting, however we have the ability to continue the conversation with the visitor in more detail during our business hours.
A website is a helpful and low-cost form of advertising (compared to Facebook ads, and other sponsored paid advertising). It allows you to share promotional and special offers with your present and potential customers. Additionally, you have the ability to make changes in terms of seasonal discounts to promote a specific type of your products that are generally demanded by your customers. You have complete control of your website, and what is put on there. You can always change it with no limitations.

5.) Build credibility
In this present competitive marketplace, hardly can any new business achieve the desired recognition or compete with other similar businesses without a web presence. As a business owner, you cannot afford to lose the opportunity to make a good first impression. This is better achieved with a professionally built website. It also gives you the look of a big corporation. Going outside of a social media platform, and getting out there provides a more established appearance to your business, you’re taking it one step further than just making a Facebook/Instagram page.
End of the day we are not saying avoid social media as we mentioned these are great traffic builder sites, just realize that Facebook, Instagram, Twitter should NOT be your main platform.
